Ocean Data Factory
Research Project, 2019 – 2021

Purpose and goal: The objective of Ocean Data Factory (ODF) is to enable Sweden to be a global leader for sustainability and innovation in the digital blue economy. ODF will allow the use of Artificial Intelligence to many different types of ocean data, from Swedish as well as international data sources. The number application of AI on ocean data is huge and includes areas such as shipping and logistics, emissions to air as well as water, climate change, regulation of marine resources for a sustainable future, and sustainable aquaculture to cope with food supply and energy supply. Expected results and effects: Ocean Data Factory will lead to both commercial and non-commercial operators increasing their use of data from the sea. Actors in the marine/maritime sector will gain increased competence on APIs, and increase their skills and use of AI. Ocean Data Factory will contribute to sustainability in the blue economy.

Approach and implementation: The work in the Data Factory will be conducted in innovation cycles of about 6 months. Each cycle begins with internal consortium work, followed by open workshops and concluded with hackaton/demonstration of results and knowledge. ODF is a collaboration between universities, institutes and companies, with an external reference group of experts in the field of marine data.

Work Packages:
1. Management and external communication 2. Continuous evaluation and innovation 3. Data sources and ethical, legal aspects 4. API and data streams 5. AI/ML/NN 6. Dissemination and upscaling
