FoodPort Connecting Food Port Regions-Between and beyond
Research Project, 2010 – 2014

Food products, beverages and tobacco transport accounted for the largest share of European road tonne-kilometres in 2008, at over 15%. The food production relies heavily on road transport, leading to congestion, poor air quality and environmental degradation. Demands for environmentally friendly food production and distribution practices are beginning to emerge. It is anticipated that this will increase as awareness of increasing costs and damage to the environment. Food Port brings together local authorities, knowledge organizations, food industries and ports from 5 countries. The central aim of the project is to improve the accessibility and transport-logistic system of different food clusters around the North Sea Region. Some objectives of the project are; • Realization of green transport corridors for food products • Putting into practice modal shift • Development of technological innovation within the food supply chain • Improvement of accessibility between the partner regions • Creation of new partnerships for collaboration in food and logistics The research is carried out by the research centre Northern LEAD
