Bioenergy for what and how much? – Modelling of cost-effective bioenergy pathways in the Swedish energy system
Research Project, 2012 – 2014

This project aims to identify cost-effective pathways for an increased use of bioenergy in the Swedish energy system, to increase the knowledgebase concerning techno-economic system interactions related to bioenergy, and to strengthen insights regarding system effects of increased competition for limited biomass resources. The project applies a broad systems perspective in which both the stationary energy system and the transport sector is taken into account. Technical, economic as well as environmental parameters are considered. The methodology is based on quantitative energy systems modelling based on the so-called MARKAL/TIMES model. The expected results include an identification of bioenergy-based fuel and technology scenarios that cost-effectively meet demand for energy services as well as environmental objectives; assessment of costs and benefits for different ways to use bioenergy, and costs and effects of different environmental and energy policy approaches.
