Increased steam temperature in grate fired boilers - Steamboost
Research Project, 2014 – 2018

The overall goal of the project is to improve plant economy by enabling an increased electricity production. The idea is to install a so-called Steamboost superheater in part of the furnace with less corrosive flue gasses aiming to increase the steam temperature up to at least 480°C. In this project CFD calculations will be linked to the deposit composition and corrosion rate of conventional superheater materials, state of the art stainless steels as well as FeCrAl alloys in different positions in the furnace. The field tests will be accompanied by a detailed laboratory investigation of FeCrAl alloys in order to identify and understand the usefulness and limitations of aluminium oxide forming materials as components for biomass- and waste-fired boilers. This will include tests also at temperatures, in the range of 600-900°C, as these materials might be used in a co-axial solution. The aim is in addition, in a second phase, to a test a Steamboost superheater in a commercial plant.
