Minerals and waste materials rich in certain transition metal oxides (notably Fe and Mn) have the ability to become reduced by fuel gases and oxidized by air at certain conditions. The objective of the OxyCar-FBC project is to investigate such materials as solid oxygen carriers in future technologies for fluidized bed combustion of biomass. Three applications are addressed: i) Oxygen-Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC), ii) Chemical-Looping Combustion with CO2 capture (CLC - negative CO2), iii) Chemical-Looping Combustion without CO2 capture (CLC - w/o capture). The three technologies are strongly related to each other and are intended to reduce emissions, improve efficiency, reduce costs and ultimately also to capture CO2 emissions during generation of heat and/or power from biomass. The project gathers researchers and companies in Sweden and Austria, leading countries in biomass utilization. It has a strong experimental focus and also includes tests in commercial biomass-fired boilers.
