Parking norms and mobility services for sustainable mobility

To address the challenges related to urban mobility technological innovation, while necessary, will not be sufficient. Behavioral changes are also called for. Solutions aimed at shifting travel behavior often entail a combination of restrictions in private car ownership and attractive alternatives such as mobility services. The aim of this project is to study the role of reduced parking availability combined with mobility services in shifting toward sustainable mobility patterns.
The project is divided into two subprojects. The aim of the first is to identify key factors that influence the environmental impact of tenants’ mobility patterns. This will be done through a survey of tenants of the Swedish housing company Wallenstam that has provided a mobility service to their residents. In subproject two, cases representing different mobility patterns will be identified from the survey and studied in-depth in order to understand the underlying factors and interplay between activities and mobility. One of the case studies will be a new residential building with no private parking built by Riksbyggen.
The project is a collaboration between researchers at Chalmers and University of Gothenburg in partnership with representatives from housing companies (Wallenstam, Riksbyggen) and knowledge centers (Johanneberg Science Park and Mistra Urban Futures). A continuous dialogue with the partners will allow for increased societal relevance and pertinence of the results for key stakeholders.
