Hardware For Next generation Millimeter Wave Automotive Radar Sensor
Research Project, 2019 – 2022

Purpose and goal: The purpose of the FORWARD project is to develop hardware for next generation radar sensors for active safety and self-driving vehicles. The focus is on the design and integration of the antenna. The antennas are realized using gap waveguide technology. Both 77 GHz and 100+ GHz applications are in focus. In parallel with developing optimised hardware, the optimal sensor system for self-driving vehicles is also studied in this research program. Expected results and effects: The overall result can be summarized by that 1; We will investigate and present an optimal radar sensor system for self-driving vehicles. By optimally, it is meant to reach full coverage around the vehicle at the lowest cost, lowest energy consumption and minimal data processing. 2; Show on how to implement and manufacture the sensors using gap waveguide technology at 77 GHz and 100+ GHz. The focus is on conformal antennas and double polarized antennas and we will manufacture complete antennas / radar prototypes. 3; Demonstrate a passive ice detector suitable for self-driving vehicles. Approach and implementation: The project consists of 6 work packages and each party in the project is responsible for different work packages and to achieve the set goals. Since there are clear dependencies between the different work packages, the working persons in the project will meet 3-5 times a year to follow up progress and transfer knowledge between the different parts.
