Advances in Preparation and Applications of Lignin Nanoparticles
Book chapter, 2024

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) have emerged as innovative bio-based materials with potential for various applications. During this time, there has been extensive research focused on developing improved preparation methods and scaling up certain technologies. LNPs have proven useful in areas that were previously considered challenging for lignin use. Additionally, LNPs may offer sustainability advantages such as inherent functionality of lignin compared to nanoparticles made from synthetic polymers. One of the main reasons LNPs are expected to continue to renew lignin materials research is their ability to overcome issues related to polydispersity and heterogeneity of lignin, in addition to advances in scaled production. To fully utilize the benefits of LNPs, it is crucial to customize them for specific applications, considering their well-defined size, surface chemistry, and desired stability and performance characteristics. This chapter gives an overview of the preparation methods, properties, and applications of LNPs as well as future perspectives of these promising nano/micromaterials.
