Circular electric vehicle batteries: Integrating the circular supply chain and logistics perspectives

The rapid evolution of the electric vehicle battery market, combined with unclear actor roles, has led to complex circular supply chains (CSCs). This study investigates supply chain structures and logistics services needed for reuse, repurposing, and recycling. Based on 14 semi-structured interviews with stakeholders like original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), energy solution providers, battery service providers (BSPs), and recyclers, it identifies two intertwined CSCs: OEM-led and BSP-led. The study highlights emerging roles in battery collection, sorting, and dismantling, emphasizing the need for specialized logistics, a skilled workforce, standardized platforms, and improved information flow for managing CSCs for electric vehicle batteries.
