Red Threads : The Historiography of Menstruation in the Nordics

During the 2010s, menstruation gained increasing attention in the public debate. At the same time, the interdisciplinary academic field of critical menstruation studies was established. Internationally, historians have contributed to both the public and academic discourse on menstruation, including the development of menstrual folklore, products, and medical treatments over time. But what is the status of menstruation history in the Nordic region? This article places the growing public debate about menstruation in the Nordic countries into a historical context. We examine the historiography of menstrual history in the region, country by country, to highlight how this field is evolving and what regional particularities characterize the research. At the end, we share our thoughts on future Nordic menstruation history research.

På 2010-tallet fikk menstruasjon en stadig større plass i den offentlige debatten. Dette sammenfaller med etableringen av det tverrfaglige akademiske feltet kritiske menstruasjonsstudier. Internasjonalt har historikere gjennom årene bidratt til både offentlig og akademisk diskurs omkring menstruasjonens folkloristikk, produkter og medisinske behandling. Men hva er status for menstruasjonshistorien i Norden? Denne artikkelen plasserer den økende offentlige debatten i Norden omkring menstruasjon inn i en historiefaglig kontekst. Vi undersøker menstruasjonshistoriens historiografi i regionen, land for land, for å belyse hvordan dette fagfeltet utvikler seg, og hvilke regionale særegenheter som karakteriserer forskningen. Til slutt deler vi våre refleksjoner om fremtidig nordisk menstruasjonshistorisk forskning.
