Novel Air-Filled Multilayer Metal-Plate Phase Shifter
Paper in proceeding, 2026

A novel millimeter-wave and terahertz phase shifter is proposed and designed with wide bandwidth and low insertion loss. The scheme of the phase shifter is based on length tunable waveguide transmission line. The tunable transmission line is implemented by using electromagnetic band-gap arrays and multilayer thin-metal plates. Movable metal plates in the waveguide are newly introduced to satisfy the transmission line length for the purpose of a certain phase shift. The phase shifter is realized by using eleven thin-metal plates and seven waveguide sections. Simulation results show that the device operates across the 131-170 GHz frequency band, with a reflection coefficient below -17 dB and an insertion loss better than 5.8 dB over the entire bandwidth.
