The influence of digital technologies towards sustainable production
Paper in proceeding, 2019

The introduction of digital technologies for industrial applications enables new production concepts to emerge. This study aims to review the literature on various digital technologies currently in use and in development in the manufacturing industry, and assess their potential in improving the sustainability performance of production systems. Interviews with experts were conducted to gain a deeper insight on specific applications. The results highlight a knowledge gap about how companies can sustainably seize the opportunities offered by digital technologies. Finally, a simple hierarchical model is proposed to support the development of smart, sustainable factories.
