Engineering education and gamification for the sustainable development
Forskningsprojekt, 2021
– 2024
Sustainability is a critical topic and needs to be integrated more systematically in education in general and in industrial
engineering especially. Games and simulations have proven to be effective and engaging teaching methods. This
collaboration aims to develop educational tools and methods by drawing upon gamification and digitalization to create an
immersive environment and promote deeper learning. The learning activities proposed can also foster the development of
professional skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication. The teaching tool we develop in this collaboration will
be tested through a series of workshops in Japan to gain insights into game designs and delivery formats, highlighting
benefits and drawbacks of various game aspects and media used. The intended outcomes of this collaboration are
three-fold: (1) a novel teaching tool and workshop procedure to engage participants with the topic of sustainability and focus
on the affective learning experience; (2) lessons learnt on the effect of various game elements and mechanics delivered
through different media on the learning outcomes; (3) a guide for game developers to consider how game aspects align with
learning outcomes in the cognitive and affective domains.
