NQCIS
Forskningsprojekt, 2023
– 2025
Data security has become a major issue as our democratic, financial and defense institutions heavily rely on information security.
Technological progress risks putting our current security and encryption systems at risk: the emergence of quantum computers endangers
existing encryption systems. We therefore need to develop and implement new encryption systems that are quantum-secure. Based on
the rich and well established excellence in Sweden in the field of quantum communication, NQCIS will implement and test deployed
Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) systems, test and validate different implementations for the specific needs of Sweden: Metropolitan
networks but also long distance land and submarine links that are required by the specific geography of the country. NQCIS will establish
a close collaboration and national community among research partners and industrial companies ranging from the giant Ericsson to
emerging spinoff companies. This tight collaboration will allow for a strong expertise in quantum communication to take shape in Sweden
to allow for a subsequent massive development of QKD across the whole country and to link with neighboring countries. NQCIS will
expand based on the quantum network already linking KTH and Ericsson in Stockholm with deployed optical fibers that has been in use
since 2019. We will expand the network and make it available to all parties interested in testing the most recent quantum communication
systems made in the EU as well as novel concepts and equipment developed in Sweden.
