Predicera framtida produktion och användning av natriumjonbatterier
Forskningsprojekt, 2025 – 2026

Sodium-ion batteries have emerged as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries for various energy-storage applications. Although there exists some variation in e.g. cathode active materials, sodium-ion batteries are generally based on more abundant and wide-spread resources – for example, sodium is about 1000 times more abundant than lithium. Sodium-ion batteries are expected to be used for stationary energy storage in the future, but also for various vehicles, in particular smaller vehicles such as two-/three-wheelers and smaller electric cars. The aim of this project is to try to project future production and use of sodium-ion batteries. As there are large uncertainties regarding future market shares and growth rates, different scenarios will be considered, reflecting different possible developments and ranges in data.  Having an approximate idea of the future prospect of sodium-ion batteries could be of value to many different actors, such as researchers planning future applications, funding agencies preparing research calls, governmental agencies considering new legislation, and investors thinking about where to put their money.
