Betryggande omkörningar av cyklister på landsväg (ComCy)
Forskningsprojekt, 2025
– 2027
The ComCy project aims at making rural roads more attractive and accessible for cycling and other active travel by addressing the feelings, attitude and behaviour of motorists. This builds on the analyses and concept development carried out in our project in Stage 1 of the Human-Centred Mobility programme, showing how overtakes should be performed to be perceived as reassuring by cyclists. We now investigate intervention strategies to achieve this, and provide tools to quantify the effect on rural road accessibility. Concretely, we assess the current situation on rural roads, which today is largely unknown, to build a baseline for quantitative comparisons. We log and annotate overtaking behaviour with cycling “citizen scientists” and make a survey to capture the motorists’ perspective. In parallel, we evaluate immersive trainings for car and truck drivers and interventions on national cycling routes to assess how drivers can be intrinsically motivated to adapt their behaviour to match cyclists’ needs and preferences. A GIS-based scaling-up of the baseline and interventions quantifies the potential for increased cycling on rural roads. Finally, we explore communication and campaigning strategies to reach national and international stakeholders. Thus, the project provides a base for the measurement of traffic-based barriers to cycling, the potential to remove those barriers by addressing motorists, and a method for long-term quantitative assessments.
