Kooperativ kommunikation med sidinformation
Forskningsprojekt, 2011 – 2014

Summary The goal of this project is to investigate, design and analyze efficient cooperative techniques for wireless sensor networks and wireless cellular networks. In wireless sensor networks, due to their vicinity, neighboring nodes measure statistically dependent data. Most of the previous works on cooperative networks, however, assume uncorrelated sources. This project is intended to fill this gap and analyze cooperative techniques in the presence of source correlation. We will analyze and design distributed joint source-channel coding techniques for this scenario, with especial emphasis on sparse-graph codes and turbo codes. In the context of wireless cellular networks, very little research has been devoted to cooperative schemes when side information is available at the transmitting nodes. This project will analyze and propose cooperating strategies exploiting side information at the transmitter side. Our aims are to: 1. Develop a framework for systematic analysis and design of cooperative wireless sensor networks with correlated sources and cellular networks with channel state information 2. Develop efficient distributed source-channel coding strategies for these scenarios Expected results are: 1. Fundamental contributions to the theory of coding for cooperative wireless sensor networks and wireless cellular networks 2. Capacity-approaching practical coding schemes for wireless sensor networks and wireless cellular network with channel state information Populärvetenskaplig beskrivning Wireless access to communications networks has developed rapidly over the last few decades, and shows no signs of slowing down. Key issues for future wireless networks are therefore to provide high-data-rate wireless access, support a large number of mobile users, and ensure seamless coverage across geographical service areas; all subject to limited resources in terms of available frequency bandwidth, transmission power and computational ability of portable devices. The time-varying topology and the inherent cooperation between nodes in wireless networks cannot be appropriately captured by a point-to-point link decomposition. In fact, due to the broadcast nature of the wireless channel the information transmitted by a node A to the destination (or several destinations) is received by all nodes within a certain range. In such a scenario point-to-point communication is not optimal. Instead, these nodes can help node A (i.e. they can cooperate) to transmit its information to the destination with higher reliability or less overall power. Cooperation promises huge gains in terms of capacity, performance and overall power consumption. The project focuses on the innovative use of channel and network coding to increase both throughput and reliability of cooperative wireless networks. The goal of the project is to investigate, design and analyze efficient cooperative techniques for wireless sensor networks and wireless cellular networks.
