Marine Engine Fuel Injection
Forskningsprojekt, 2016 – 2020

The goal of the project lies in the clarification of the influence of the in-nozzle flow – cavitation in particular – on primary breakup, spray morphology and combustion under the conditions as they can be found in large two-stroke marine diesel engines.

Already carried out investigations in the constant volume Spray Combustion Chamber (SCC) at Winterthur Gas & Diesel Ltd. revealed effects which could not be further examined with conventional methods.

In a first step, the project will use transparent nozzles for high-speed investigations of the in-nozzle flow and time gated ballistic imaging for analysing the spray breakup. The second step will transfer the investigated nozzle geometries to metallic versions for spray morphology investigations in the SCC under engine similar conditions.

The project shall answer questions about the processes in the spray nozzle and transfer the results into extended CFD models.
