The Performance of PVD Coated Grade in Milling of ADI 900
Paper i proceeding, 2010

The aim of this investigation is to map and optimize the performance of a new PVD coated grade in the milling of austempered ductile iron 900-grade, ADI900, in terms of tool life. From the milling tests of ADI900, the new PVD-coated grade shows a high ability to withstand abrasive wear over a wide range of cutting data, despite of the relatively low coating thickness and the fact that increased feed and speed led to decreased tool life by rapid wear development. This is due to high aluminum content, fine grains and low stress level in the coating, which increase the coating ability to withstand the mechanical and thermal impact. Consequently, since the main wear mechanism in milling of ADI900 consists of abrasive wear and small chipping of the cutting edge, new edge geometry in combination with this PVD coated grade cou
