Industrialized light-weight steel bridge concept using corrugated core steel sandwich plates

A corrugated core steel sandwich plate is a high-performing all-steel structural element. It consists of two plane outer steel plates separated by a folded corrugated core plate. Connecting the three plates, hybrid laser-arc welding can be used beneficially. The steel sandwich deck has many benefits compared to the conventional steel bridge deck solution as a less orthotropic behavior, a higher stiffness to weight ratio and an industrialized construction process. This paper aims at presenting the state of the art background to steel sandwich bridge decks with respect to structural performance and manufacturing and to display the areas of enhancement of the bridge concept. Furthermore it aims at presenting a case study and discussion regarding the weld detail configuration in terms of stiffness and fatigue strength displaying a dual weld configuration as a viable solution. In addition possible applications for sandwich bridge decks are discussed with the basis of performed case studies showing weight savings by up to 44%.
