formaldehyde with propionic aldehyde in the presence of a metal hydroxide comprises a no. of steps including evapg. the
reaction mixt. allowing only trimethylolethane to at least partially crystallize as crude trimethylolethane, evapg. remaining
water, heating obtained reaction mixt. and/or obtained crude trimethylolethane, and sublimating trimethylolethane for
recovery as purified product
