“Power System Protection and Monitoring” Course at Chalmers: Development, Experience and Evaluation
Övrigt konferensbidrag, 2025

This paper presents a master-level course entitled “EEK202: Power System Protection and Monitoring” which is offered annually at Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden. The course consists of two main parts: i) Protection part on short-circuit calculations, operating principles and settings of major protective relays in both transmission and distribution grids; ii) Monitoring part on power system measurement techniques and state estimation, SCADA and applications of phasor measurement units in power system real-time monitoring and control. The lectures and tutorial exercises give the fundamentals on the theory side while a relay laboratory and computer-based projects using the commercially graded power system protection tool PSS®CAPE to enhance students’ learning with hands-on and realistic power system conditions. Moreover, the course integrates several invited lectures from the power industry giving students real-world perspectives on different topics. The course has been successfully offered and well-received by students at Chalmers. With the ambition to share and discuss our experience on the course development, the challenges and lessons learned as well as students’ evaluation, this paper is intended to serve as a guide and inspiration for developing a similar course at other technical universities.
