Defining graphene-related two-dimensional materials (GR2Ms) through international standardisation: Comment on “Revisiting the nomenclature for two-dimensional carbon materials”
Övrig text i vetenskaplig tidskrift, 2026

International standardised terminology is essential for clear and effective communication across the graphene and wider 2D materials community. In this paper, we outline the scientific and technical rationale behind the recent ISO/TC 229 (Nanotechnologies) definition of the term graphene-related two-dimensional material (GR2M) which has recently been published as part of ISO/TS 80004-13. We respond to specific concerns raised recently by Gulumian and Fadeel on the GR2M term which was developed through consensus in ISO/TC 229. We discuss why alternative terms were rejected and why consistent vocabulary is important for research, standards, and regulation.
