Localisation of deformations in concrete subjected to compression

In the present study a three-dimensional plasticity formulation for concrete was used to analyse the occurrence of localisations in compression both on the material point level and on the structural level. On the material point level, the influence of the position of the stress state in the deviatoric plane and of the hydrostatic pressure is studied. On the structural level two different structural parts, namely a wall subjected to uniform multiaxial compressive stress fields and a column in eccentric compression, were analysed by means of three-dimensional finite element models. The analyses show that the onset of localisation depends on the type of compressive stress fields. Hereby, the discontinuous failure criterion detects the onset of localisation. However, the size of the zone with concentrated compressive strains varies significantly during loading. Furthermore, the analyses of the eccentric compression tests show the sensitivity of how the structure is modelled.
