Application of Manufacturing Strategies: The influence of manufacturing strategies upon the decision process when investing in new assembly equipment

This article presents the results from a series of interviews at Ericsson Mobile Communications AB in Sweden.
Topics covered are both the overall objectives of the company and the manufacturing strategies formulated to
support these objectives. One interesting issue is the status of manufacturing and the influence manufacturing is
allowed to have upon the process of designing new phones and developing new technology. The strategies are
compared to some theory in the area and similarities and differences are discussed. Finally there is a discussion of
manufacturing of cellular phones in the future, closely related to the design of future products.
