Tomas Leffler
Tomas Leffler’s research focuses on alkali and chlorine-related problems occurring during the combustion of complex renewable fuels in circulating fluidized bed boilers (CFB). He works primarily with ilmenite, which is a bed material used within the concept of Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC). Ilmenite has capacity through redox sequence to transport oxygen in solid state within the reactor. Ilmenite has also shown alkali capturing ability which is of interest if corrosion deposition is to be avoided. Apart of bed material-alkali interactions, focus areas in Tomas research include also deposit formation, slagging and fouling, and high-temperature corrosion. The research questions have the potential to extend the boilers operational time and reduce its maintenance cost, which results in an increased efficiency and availability of the plant.
Tomas is on partial leave from Vattenfall AB where he works as an R&D engineer within the field of combustion. He is a specialist in optical gas-phase measurements of alkali chlorides in the flue gas, as well as measurements in deposit and corrosion probes.
