Matthias Schmitz is employed at the Division of Energy Technology. His research is in the field of Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC), a second-generation CO2 capture process. In CLC, solid metal oxides are used to transport oxygen to the fuel to reach a significantly lower energy penalty as compared to other CO2 capture technologies. The work comprises testing and performance evaluation of different materials, fuels and reactor systems used for the process. A research focus is the combustion efficiency of biomass fuels, whose use enables the technology to achieve net negative emissions.
Matthias holds degrees in automotive engineering and business administration from RWTH Aachen University and a PhD from Chalmers.
