Elton Chan
Elton Chan is an urban sociologist working at the intersection of sociology and spatial studies. He is particularly interested in how different urban processes and spatial transformations impact and shape social relations and organisations. He has a background in architecture and urban studies, and has more than 3 years of work experience in various architecture and design practices in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Stockholm. Elton received his PhD in Sociology from Lund University, Sweden in May 2023. His dissertation, The Last Urban Frontier: Commodification of Public Space and the Right to the City in Insurgent Hong Kong, is centred on the production and transformation of public spaces and their socio-spatial implications in Hong Kong. At Chalmers, Elton will work on the research project “Dwellology” funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and in collaboration with LiU and LTH. The project aims at contributing to knowledge for the planning and design of multi-residential buildings that can be adapted to new needs, while minimising energy and resource use when society changes or crises arise.
