Renewable energy use and TES for transport infrastructure winter maintenance
Research Project, 2021 – 2025

The project will develop knowledge and technique for de-icing & snow melting systems for urban & rural transport infrastructure (bridge decks, roads, pavements, train switches, stairs, tunnel entrances etc) using renewable energy captured by infrastructure elements, geothermal energy and underground thermal energy storage. Academia & industry collaborate. The project is part of the Swedish contribution to the new IEA ECES Annex about de-icing & snow melting systems for transport infrastructure. Participants contribute with results from a test area in Östersund, knowledge and development of technology, components & models for estimation of captured energy, energy demand & system performance of de-icing systems in transport infrastructure. Main focus is Swedish/Nordic conditions (climate, geology). Results are used for international state-of-the-art/market potential, development of models/simulation, development of technology & components, guidelines for design, construction, monitoring.
