TANDEM: InTelligent Energy DAta MaNagement and Online DEcision Making
Research Project, 2022 – 2026

The electrification of transportation and industry poses great challenges for utilities and grid owners. The amount of energy distributed to grid actors will increase but, despite the planned expansions, the increase in the grid capacity will not grow at pace with such increased demand. The solution to this challenge lies in the ability to support flexibility, leveraging e.g., storage capacity from fixed infrastructure or electric vehicles that are charged and discharged in flexible ways. TANDEM’s goal is to investigate a key component for decision-making processes: efficient and timely big data handling and processing. In the state-of-the-art, new functions and capabilities are required to make such flexibility a reality. To name a few: online monitoring to e.g., find bottlenecks in the distribution infrastructure, better prognosis methods to determine when flexibility is needed, and economic control applications to determine the size and price of flexibility orders. TANDEM counts on academic and industrial experts that collaborated and fostered inter-disciplinary knowledge-transfer about data handling and decision making in Smart Grids and Advanced Metering Infrastructures over more than 10 years.
