FA6 FUTURE
Research Project, 2023
– 2026
Regional rail transport is a crucial part of most countries' overall rail transport development programs as it will need to facilitate large numbers of people reaching major urban centres comfortably and with a reduced C02 footprint.
Many European countries are investing heavily in regional services, driven by the desire of many to live in less congested areas with easy access to large cities. Trains running on these regional lines heading towards main urban stations may connect to main lines protected by ERTMS/ETCS signalling systems or terminate at a station that has no interaction with other lines.
The ERJU project Destination 6 (Regional) will collect the results of the Destination 2 project, particularly the signalling and automation specifications that are simplified and cost effective enough to be applied to regional lines. In addition, results from Destination 1 relating to TMS solutions incorporated.
Destination 6 should also take care of often neglected independent regional lines physically or administratively unconnected to the nation-wide network. For those lines, interoperability is not a strict requirement, so, consequently, a highly optimized architecture - standardised in Europe - may be required.
