SWITCH the eating habits: From mission and communication to sustainable and healthy food consumption
Research Project, 2025
– 2027
SWITCH 2.0 aims to accelerate the transition to healthy and sustainable eating habits by developing, testing, and disseminating tools and methods based on science. The project builds on the EU project SWITCH, in which Chalmers and RISE established the SWITCH Food Hub in Västra Götaland—a platform that brings together over 150 actors from the food, health, and sustainability sectors. The project focuses on 3 dietary missions where science indicates the greatest potential for improving both health and sustainability: increasing whole grain consumption, expanding the role of plant-based foods, and promoting sustainably produced fish and seafood. Through training, recipes, nudging strategies, communication materials, and targeted efforts in schools, sports venues, and socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, the project aims to make the transition easier for both consumers and public institutions. A key initiative will be carried out in schools, where 10,000 children will try whole grain-based meals. The project will also develop a national whole grain symbol in collaboration with government agencies and the food industry. The project is led by Chalmers in collaboration with RISE, the Swedish Food Agency, and in close partnership with SWITCH actors such as FullkornsFrämjandet, Skolmatsakademin, and Hälsoteket i Väster. Together, we are creating scientifically grounded solutions that can be scaled across Sweden to contribute to better public health and reduced climate impact.
