GIS-based Time model. Gothenburg, 1960-2018 (Fusion Point Gothenburg - Subproject A-x2)

The Spatial Morphology Group (SMoG) studies and develops tools for analyzing the spatial form of the city and how its spatial structure relates to urban processes of social, economic and ecological nature. At the moment we are working on several projects with the shared objective to develop digital tools to transfer knowledge from research to practice and support the urban development process. One of them is the Longitudinal model of Gothenburg, describing the historical development of the city's physical form from 1960 until today. The intention is that the model will contribute to the understanding of the importance and influence of urban development projects in the city over time. This is something that today is largely lacking. The model is GIS-based and comprises of a series of GIS-layers, such as the street network, the buildings and the plot structure/land division. In a next step, the model can be used to study the shifts of centrality patterns though the years, the densification processes or the changes in the patterns of land division, related to urban development choices and planning ideologies, or to greater changes of other socioeconomic factors and important historical events.

The project is funded by Älvstranden Utveckling AB in the framework of a larger cooperation project called Fusion Point Gothenburg.
