Railway vehicle risk analyses
Research Project, 2019

Railway traffic in the EU is expected to increase significantly. However, the rail network does not expand at a similar rate. Operational disturbances therefore carry increasing costs. At the same time, safety and environmental concerns are more important than ever.
The situation calls for innovative solutions, but also clear and well-founded safety, reliability and environmental criteria that the solutions must meet. This requires holistic risk analyses. In contrast to current risk analyses that focus on one issue and are mainly based on expert rankings, such analyses need to employ the large amount of asset management data that is available. The often low-quality of the data calls for a structured analysis that relates data to the related risks and effects, e.g. through numerical simulations enhanced by machine learning. These topics are addressed by the proposed initiative.
