Web-based EPD tool for lifecycle perspective for aggregate production (EPD Berg)
Research Project, 2019 – 2022

The purpose of EPD Berg is to develop a common tool for the rock material industry that connects the actual production chain of rock materials with simulation based on proven mathematical models with European databases and other available EPD systems. The aim of the project is to develop a functioning demonstrator of a tool so that both producers and society get a common and accepted way to calculate environmental performance and interpret the environmental impact of rock material production.

The result is that the customers receive a pre-certified LCA declaration, the municipalities receive a summary of the environmental impact that will occur in the next month in all quarries in the municipality, and the site managers at the crushing plant receive a recipe for a potentially improved production from both the environmental and productivity point of view.

The effect of this is expected to be for both buyers and users to put more stringent requirements on the producers, who will also adapt to the situation over time and be forced to become pro-active in their production processes.

The project is based on the needs of the various stakeholders and the use of the upcoming tool. In addition, modeling and simulation of rock material production (Chalmers) is coupled with the environment and LCA expertise (IVL). The tool will then be tested and evaluated by the three participating rock material producers as well as by customers and authorities.
