DEterministic MOdelling of the Jules Horowitz Reactor (DEMO-JHR)
Research Project, 2012 – 2016

The proposed research programme aims at further developing and improving deterministic computational methods for modeling the behavior of the Jules Horowitz Reactor (JHR). Due to the unique design and complexity of the JHR, the modeling of the nuclear core of the JHR requires special techniques for determining the spatial and temporal distribution of the following interrelated quantities: the neutron density field (in the core), the flow field and temperature fields (in the entire facility). In the planned research, several key aspects of the JHR modeling will be tackled. First, a new procedure for determining the coarse distribution of the thermal-hydraulic variables in the entire facility, while obtaining detailed in-core information, will be developed. Due to the unconventional flow conditions in the JHR, new thermal-hydraulic correlations will also be tested and implemented, based on past experiments. In addition, an uncertainty and sensitivity methodology will be developed, so that the effect of uncertain parameters and/or models on the code results can be better assessed. Finally, uncertainties in neutronic calculations will also be considered, with the establishment of a new procedure for assessing the effect of uncertainties in depletion calculations. Due to the high neutron flux considered in the JHR, the evaluation of such uncertainties is essential. The aspects considered above will ultimately improve the reliability of the deterministic calculations of the JHR.
