Design and implementation of Energy Management for HEV/PHEV and optimization of a Range Extender vehicle
Research Project, 2013 – 2016

The strict requirements to reduce CO2 and emissions have been driving the OEM's to focus on electrification of vehicles as a possible solution. Powertrain configurations which contains different types of electrification adds complexity to the system which makes the control and calibration of the vehicle difficult for a drivecycle. The result is that a few of these vehicles will gain their full potential in terms of energy consumption and emissions because of rule based algorithms in the control system which takes into account, response, consumption requirements and torque reserve, etc. The rule based Energy Management does not either take into consideration the information about the energy need for the drivecycle, or the power distribution. The potential in reduced fuel consumption, depending on drivecycle, can be between 5-15 % if information about the driving cycle, power distrubution, energy need, is known.
