ADAPT: Adaptive DigitAl Power sysTems
Research Project, 2019 – 2020

The transition towards an energy landscape in which renewable energy plays a dominant role is rapidly changing existing power and electricity systems. Key aspects of this revolution are the new predominant role of information technology (IT) and the possible
shift from traditional centralized decision systems to distributed ones. In this landscape, new market players, in the form of prosumers, are emerging as an active player that not only
requests energy, but that can also provide it and thus influence energy and cost decisions on the large scale. The emergence of prosumers imposes a shift in the way energy is dispatched, stored and sold in the network. In addition, there is currently not any clear
definition of who can become a prosumer, and thus, it can either be individuals, groups of individuals or organisations.

The impact of renewable energy sources, which depends on the interplay between the various prosumers sharing the grid, will be determined by various factors. Due to the distributed nature of having an increased number of active market players and forthcoming energy technology there is a great need for improved understanding of: (1) the resolution and the availability of data the different actors can/are willing to share and access and (2) the evolving nature of the decisions made by different groups of prosumers, controlled by both external factors (e.g., the availability of a certain renewable source of energy) and internal factors (e.g.,
the effects of decisions previously made by the groups of prosumers).
