VCSEL Arrays for Multicore Fiber Interconnects with an Aggregate Capacity of 240 Gbit/s

We report on the performance and uniformity of dense two-dimensional 6-channel 850 nm VCSEL arrays intended for multimode multicore fiber interconnects. Two circular array designs, differing in their common cathode configuration, are investigated and compared. We demonstrate error-free data transmission (bit-error-rate < 10-12) up to 40 Gbit/s and 85°C for all channels, which can enable an aggregate capacity of 240 Gbit/s over a single multicore fiber.
