Reducerad materialförbrukning inom järnvägsdrift (SP38)

The material consumption in railway operations is significant. One example is the tens of thousands of tonnes of steel being scrapped, worn or machined off wheelsets and rails every year, only on Swedish railways. This is one of the major remaining environmental loads of railway operation, relating to both resources (via mining and
steelmaking) and energy (re-melting and transport). Reducing this material consumption through enhanced design, reduced wear, and improved maintenance strategies is the core objective of the project. To this end, extensive knowledge of material deterioration, and possibilities and challenges in influencing this is employed. In particular, the potential for continuous monitoring, numerical
simulations and predictions, and data analyses are investigated and clarified. This includes how altered practices will affect safety and economy. An important aspect here is how current regulations can (and should) be adapted to these “new” technologies. Results will be scientifically published and communicated to regulatory bodies and the industry. The holistic assessment regarding consequences
of reduced material use is a new approach it will spur further research and implementation projects. It will also be referenced in upcoming project proposals, not least in Horizon Europe.
