Understanding the effects of machining-induced nano-scale structural changes on the surface integrity of gas-turbine discs
Forskningsprojekt, 2015
– 2016
The increasing demand for energy from intermittent sources, such as wind or solar, is greatly changing the demands on power generating gas turbines. Many turbines today therefore operate under conditions for which they were not initially designed. This significantly increases the risk of initiation of cracks in safety critical components, in particular in areas where the surface is affected by machining. The project will applies state-of-the-art microscopy and micro-analytical techniques in order to understand the effects of machining processes on the material in the surface zone of turbine discs. The results will be connected to fatigue testing to clarify the impact of machining induced structural changes, and will be used to establish conditions for safe and reliable operation of gas turbines.
