Unfolding Sea Ice Dynamics with SAR
Forskningsprojekt, 2016 – 2018

This project aims to improve current measurements of ice drift with satellite radar to better handle summer conditions and the dynamical marginal ice. Building on the ice drift retrieval, we will create a number of derived products related to ice deformation (e.g. ice convergence/divergence, shear, etc.) and localization of leads and ridges. It will be investigated how interferometric SAR may be used to measure deformation in connection to fast ice. The developed products will be validated and assessed in terms of accuracy and then be used for two applications. First, the aim is that the results should lead to better and safer ice navigation. Second, the products will be used to evaluate the ice model LIM3, coupled to the ocean circulation model NEMO.
