Biomass production and conversion in sustainably managed landscapes, part 2
Forskningsprojekt, 2020 –

The research activities are directed towards inter-disciplinary broad sustainability analyses of biomass supply systems. Focus is on land use and the integration of biomass supply systems with associated industrial activities and uses of the biobased products. Climate effects is naturally one key aspect but we address also other challenges, which have so far received too little attention is society
as well as in the scientific community. One example is pesticide use and the associated ecological and health impacts. As one important focus area, we will perform comprehensive analyses to inform
implementation strategies for grass-based biorefineries to produce bioenergy, high-quality protein feed and biomaterials, while also reducing environmental impacts of current land use. This activity is
carried out within the Interreg-project Green Valleys, which started in 2018 and stems from initial seed funding provided by the Energy AoA. The funding from Interreg and Energy AoA provides capacity to address several challenges in the project, including both methodology development and database construction, and the construction and operation of biorefinery pilot plants that will be up
and running in Jylland and in Västra Götaland in 2020 and 2021. We collaborate with researchers in Sweden and Denmark specializing in bioenergy, crop production, animal feed systems, agricultural and environmental economy, and environmental impact assessment.
