Abstract (background, aim, method, results)
This report was developed for supporting the development of a Railway General Plan for Port of Göteborg and as an
introductory study in the research project Analysis and development of the Dry Port Concept. The work is equally financed by
Port of Göteborg and Vinnova. The report covers trends in policy, logistics, technology and actors important for the Port of Göteborg and the development of the Dry Port Concept. Parts of the report are worked up sections of earlier own work. A number of relevant trends can be distinguished:
*Increased importance of short sea shipping in EU policies
*Increased flows and further concentration of container shipping
*Far-reaching changes in the actor structure:
- Many new rail operators, mainly regarding shuttles to and from container ports
- The ports start or aquire parts of rail companies
- Deregulation of stevedoring
- Large operators, both active ports and shipping lines operate several ports
*Increased demands for security after September 11th - most important to documentation and inspections
*Port of Göteborg:
- Stronger role as hub port for Norway, Finland and in due time also for Russia and the Baltic States
- Own strategy for increased share of rail (50% of added flows)
- Strongly increasing rail flows (+25% Q1, 2003)
