The Use of a Combined Battery/Supercapacitor Storage to Provide Voltage Ride-Through Capability and Transient Stabilizing Properties by Wind Turbines

In this paper a dc-link energy storage system for wind turbines is investigated. The purposes of the energy storage are: To use the wind turbine to damp power oscillations occurring in the grid, and to improve the transient stability margin for conventional power production units connected to the grid nearby. In addition, the energy storage system can also be used to provide voltage fault-ride through capability for a wind energy installation. In this paper only modern variable-speed wind turbines with pitch control and a power electronic converter are considered. Two types of energy storage systems will be investigated: Supercapacitors and combined NiMH / Supercapacitor storage system. The batteries will provide the long-term power while supercapacitors (Electrochemical capacitor) will be used for the rapid power transients.
