Next-generation structural insights: advanced empirical models for ultimate compressive strength of ships and offshore plates
Paper i proceeding, 2024

In this study, we conduct a thorough technical review of various existing design formulas used to predict the compressive ultimate strength of plate structures in ships and offshore structures. In addition, insights and suggestions for developing advanced, generalised design formulations are provided in the in-depth reviews. Plate members typically use the plate slenderness ratio (đ›œ) to predict the ultimate limit state (ULS), formulating the relationship accordingly. These plate structures often experience complex initial imperfections, such as initial deflections and residual stresses, and several design equations, incorporating boundary conditions, have been developed based on numerous assumptions. The results are commonly presented as diagrams illustrating the relationship between the đ›œ and ULS of the plate under compression. Various empirical formulas exist, often differentiated by a đ›œ parameter to distinguish between thick and thin plates as well as the effective width concept. However, as the plate slenderness increases, there is a growing need for improved equations that can better capture the continuous ULS behaviour. This study also offers insights into the consideration of boundary conditions, initial deflection, and residual stresses. The wisdom from the present study is expected to be beneficial for structural designers and engineers working on ships and offshore platforms, providing valuable guidance for enhancing design methodologies.
