Maximizing the energy-saving potential of declutchable BEV powertrains via Eco-driving

Compared to a conventional BEV powertrain, a declutchable powertrain integrating a clutch mechanism can mechanically disconnect the electric drive unit (EDU) from the drive axle. By disengaging the clutch, the vehicle can realize the free-coasting feature, which utilizes vehicle kinetic energy while mitigating the no-load losses of the EDU. In order to maximize the energy-saving potential of such feature, this paper proposes an Eco-driving strategy based on model predictive control (MPC) specifically tailored for the declutchable BEV powertrain. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is assessed through simulation studies over three representative real-world routes. Finally, the energy consumption of the declutchable powertrain is then compared to that of a conventional BEV powertrain employing a standard Eco-driving strategy, showcasing the value of the declutchable BEV powertrain.
