Trellis-Coded Modulation in Fiber-Optic Communications
Rapport, 2008

In this paper, we for the first time propose to use rellis-coded modulation (TCM) mapped with 8-level phase shift keying (8PSK) in a fiber-optic communication system. The performance of a back-to-back system is evaluated numerically. For differential detection, an 8PSK TCM system with simple encoder and decoder gives more than 2dB coding gain compared to uncoded quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system without sacrificing transmission bandwidth. For coherent detection, a coding gain of more than 3dB is obtained.
