From the Continent to the North – German Influence on Modern Architecture in Sweden

Modern Architecture in the Nordic countries is – in contrast to that of its countries of origin, i.e. the Netherlands, France, Germany or Russia – not primarily the product of a local development, but for the most part the result of cultural transfer from these countries northward. The aim of this article is to trace this cultural transfer from Germany to Sweden and the effect of German models and examples on the emergence of Modern Architecture in Sweden. Viewing this cultural transfer in a transnational historic context can help to explain the parallels and differences, to illuminate the mechanisms underlying this cultural transfer as well as to understand the different historiographies.
