Measures for increasing the loading space utilisation of intermodal line train systems
Paper i proceeding, 2007

The focus of this conceptual article is to identify, characterise and qualitatively evaluate measures for increasing the utilisation of loading space in intermodal road-rail freight line trains. These trains operate like intercity passenger trains with short transhipment stops along rail corridors aiming at comparatively small and short flows. The measures include adapting the train capacity, the departure timing, the train route and to which terminals the trucks are sent as well as using trucks for replacing rail transport along the railway lines. Some of the measures require improved information sharing and their effect is strengthened with accompanying decision support systems and price incentives to trans-port buyers.
